Managing risk across Katoen Natie’s global logistics network, spanning 30 countries and over 1,400 acres worth of warehouse space, is a complex challenge. With thousands of solar roof panels and key infrastructure - including distribution centres, silos, and port terminals - building resilience to the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events is critical. But this is also an essential enabler in Katoen Natie’s transition to clean energy technologies.

“At Katoen Natie, we’re really committed to a greener future. We started massively installing solar panels back in 2004, and now we have up to 65,000, along with a large number of wind turbines. All those green assets, of course, have to be protected…”
Carl Leeman, Chief Risk Officer, Katoen Natie

Zurich Resilience Solutions is supporting Katoen Natie on its journey to future-proof operations against the increasing physical risks of climate change. Our climate specialists, led by Tabea van Hasselt and Ruben Torres Rico, recently conducted a comprehensive climate assessment at the company’s flagship site near the port of Antwerp. By inspecting warehouse roofs and solar panels, as well as wind turbines, the team searched for vulnerabilities to climate related hazards, such as high winds, hail, and extreme cold.

“Katoen Natie is very proactive when it comes to their risk management. They, for instance, re-oriented the solar panels to face east and west instead of toward the predominant wind directions.”
Tabea van Hasselt, Climate Resilience Specialist, Zurich Resilience Solutions

By working together, Katoen Natie is strengthening its ability to adapt to increasingly severe climate impacts, protect valuable assets, and ensure business continuity for years to come. This partnership exemplifies how forward-thinking risk management can help organizations thrive in a changing world and enable the clean energy transition
